About Us
Sophie's Foundation was created in response to the growing need to provide assistance to orphans. Instead of simply providing funding to adoptive families, which the Foundation does, the founders, Doug and Christiane Potts, recognized that through helping agencies and organizations that work with orphans and adoptions they could provide much needed assistance to many more children.
In order to meet our goals, Sophie's Foundation has taken a two-pronged approach for providing funding.
SF will offer Technology Project Grants to orphan and adoption-oriented non-profits. These grants will be used to assist organizations in harnessing the power of the Internet. For some it may just be the creation or redesign of a website. Others may benefit from more complex database applications, enabling them to store and pass information quickly and securely over the Internet. Helping organizations make use of the Internet enables us to impact the lives of more children by working with established adoption-oriented organizations versus using a one-to-one model.
Working with organizations doesn't mean that Sophie's Foundation will not get involved with a one-to-one model as well. The Foundation is in the process of acquiring funding so it can offer grants to adoptive parents. The Foundation will only work with individuals who have passed their homestudy and are working with an accredited agency or attorney. Grant receipients will not receive their grant directly. The Foundation will send funds to the agency or attorney.
Sophie's Foundation will only seek funding from private donors and other foundations. It will not solicit from the government and will not be involved with work that requires certifications or licenses beyond what is required for our tax-exempt status. At the outset the Foundation will have no paid staff. The Foundation has a Board of Directors in accordance with federal law and will work with an accredited accounting firm for financial transparency.
